Grey Heron
7th Apr 2022
If you go to Westfields Wetlands Sanctuary,as Mr.Cronin's class did last Friday, there's a fair chance you'll come across the Grey Heron.Standing at close to a metre tall, the Grey Heron will stand motionless in the water just waiting for the opportunity to catch a meal.Fish(eels are a favourite in rivers),frogs and ducklings,I'm sorry to say,are often on the menu. The bird has extremely long legs and a yellow bill. There is also a crest at the back of the head. They nest on tall evergreen trees along the North Circular Road and their nests are very big and pretty untidy. They NEVER swim!In the little video, shot by the Shannon Estuary last week, the bird is seen juggling with a fish before eventually swallowing it whole!
